Was 2017 the year we learned to live by our values?


2017 was a hugely busy year at Propel. Not only did we fill hundreds of roles but we have also managed to host six events covering a wide array of topics

These events are a great excuse for us to talk about what is important to us, showcase some amazing people and meet lots of new ones. And importantly it’s a great place to learn about what is going on the industry.

One of our key events last year was ‘The Value of Values’ where we examined company culture, how to create it, how to define your values and how important your leader is. One of the key takeaways from that event was that you need to act fast to remove people from your organization who act in a way contrary to those values.

As the year progressed we began to see just how important that respecting and working to your values can be. In the #Metoo era, we have started seeing a number of agency leaders having to leave their posts as they have been found to be behaving in a way contrary to their organization's values.

 Sometimes I don’t know whether to laugh or cry about this as on one hand, the stories never seem to stop but on the other, at last, we are beginning to see the fight back, the start of the process whereby women finally feel brave enough to speak up and speak out about being treated in an unacceptable way. Importantly, we now also live in a time where companies finally understand that these issues need to be acted on, that’s it's not ok to sweep things under the carpet and that companies who don’t keep to their values will face problems in the future.

Let’s hope that we look back at 2017 as a defining point for women in the workplace and indeed society in general. A year where women became braver and men became more aware of what was and was not acceptable. A year we learned that our organizations' values must be central to what we are and what we do.
