Why graduates are just what digital has beeen looking for.

Breaking the circle.

DigiGradsWe get a lot of phone calls and emails and tweets from grads wanting to break into the digital space. And they all seem to have a similar story - they find themselves caught in the age old vicious circle - they can’t get a job in digital because they haven’t got any digital experience but they can’t get any experience because they can’t get a job in digital.

Hugely frustrating all ‘round – especially when we are in such a candidate short market.

Grads tend to be sharp, ambitious and talented and they often have a wealth of skills and knowledge that are perfect for the digital space.  They’re digital natives who have grown up with the internet and they tend to be active across social media and other areas of the web. Pretty much spot on for a future in digital, right?

Well we think so, which is why we set up an initiative called DigiGrads – a specialised service aimed at matching the skills of bright grads with the needs of our digital clients.

For example, PPC and analytical agencies love people who get a kick out of facts and figures – the kind of people who can read the patterns and trends in massive Excel spreadsheets. Which is exactly the kind of thing most economics or maths graduates do for three years.

Or what about the major fashion brand looking for a junior copywriter to join their team. They are looking for passion, great research skills and the ability to write to tight deadlines. Well, that’s a description of most journalism students we’ve encountered.

Well, we could go on and on - a history grad would be a great addition to the digital team at a travel brand and a business student with tonnes of drive would fit brilliantly in a digital sales team.

It’s all about knowing the digital space inside out. Knowing which skills are transferable and what it takes to succeed in a particular role or vertical – even if you don’t have any specific digital experience.

And that’s where DigiGrads comes in.

It’s our job to know what our clients do, and the kind of people who would fit in their companies. And to help graduates to present themselves so that their skills and passion really shine through.

So if you’re a digital company or agency looking to fill a junior role drop us a line. We might just have the digital superstar of the future you're after - even if they're not quite what you thought you were looking for!

And if you’re a graduate looking to start a digital career, check out our resources page for loads of hints and tips about how to make sure that you are saying the things that digital employers want to hear. Or get in contact with us over on our twitter account or Facebook page,  we’re always happy to have a chat with people who are passionate about joining the digital industry.
